Fly Me Home is an exciting new venture in which homeless and vulnerably housed young people will make, build and fly a hot air balloon to raise awareness of the growing number of people without homes in the UK.
The project, launched by the award winning homeless charity Film It, aimsto raise awareness of the growing problem of the hidden homeless.

The Fly Me Home balloon will be printed with up to 30,000 signatures and messages of support to raise awareness and tackle the growing problem of people living on the streets. On the 11th December the balloon will be tethered outside St Pauls where it will be blessed by the Dean of St Pauls Cathedral in preparation for its flight across the Capital next spring. It has been ten years since the Dean of St Pauls Cathedral last carried out such a blessing.

A ten pound donation will give supporters the chance to win a ride and write a message on the balloon itself. That money will go towards helping young people back into education, training and employment. From there it’s a shortstep to a home of their own.

At the heart of Film It’s work is the understanding that vulnerable people need to address social behaviour and self esteem before they can move on to employability skills, Fly Me Home tackles this problem. For many, formal education is not an option as they have suffered exclusion from schools or their own family. The Fly Me Home project will form the centrepiece of a new social enterprise in which the homeless will be given the opportunity to regain control of their lives.

Thanks to Fly Me Home each young person will be offered individual tailored mentoring support that will be
designed to address their particular issues, directing them towards ongoing help and further encouraging them tocreate stable relationships.

A month long celebration of art events
November 2009

Tate ARTIST ROOMS, a series of artists’ talks, 15 artists in 15 days, an interview with Akenfield author Ronald Blythe – all mark firstsite’s 15th year.

firstsite, the arts organisation based in Colchester, marks its 15th birthday with a series of events, commissions and exhibitions bringing life changing and relevant contemporary art to the local and wider community. firstsite has built a reputation for showing work by a diverse range of international, national and emerging artists. Now in its 15th year firstsite looks back at its legacy and track record of exciting programmes and commissions new work to mark the occasion, demonstrating its strength in working with artists despite not having a permanent home to exhibit the work.

In its first 15 years, firstsite has created its own unique and enviable blend of artistic programming, learning opportunities, and developing artist support.

As well as supporting local artists, firstsite has been responsible for bringing internationally renowned artists to Colchester and the East of England. Highlights include: Louise Bourgeois (1996); Yoko Ono – ‘Have you Seen the Horizon Lately’ (1998); and Antony Gormley’s ‘Field for the British Isles’ (1999).

firstsite has published artists’ monographs since the mid 1990s giving now significant artists their first publication including Mariele Neudecker; Paul Rooney, Hiraki Sawa and Leo Fitzmaurice.

firstsite has always showcased East of England talent presenting the first full retrospectives of Masterweaver Peter Collingwood (1996) and painter Roderic Barrett (1997). Both exhibitions went on to tour nationally and internationally as well as supporting new artists including – Simon Carter; James Dodds; Dale Devereux Barker and Sarah Sabin.

Events to mark firstsite’s 15th birthday include:

Tate ARTISTS ROOMS
Dial H-I-S-T-O-R-Y by Johan Grimonprez
3rd November – 28 November 2009

Part of the acclaimed ARTIST ROOMS programme, firstsite is presenting this work in a very different location.

Taking place in a converted shipping container in the grounds of Colchester Institute’s School of Art & Design, Grimonprez’s acclaimed documentary on plane hijacking and modern society’s morbid fascination with terror will be screened. Using found news footage of the media’s portrayal of terrorism, the piece is at once a critique and an eerie prediction of the climate of fear we currently live in.

It is particularly timely for firstsite to be showing this work as part of Tate ARTIST ROOMS as it was originally shown as part of firstsite’s exhibition Trauma which opened the week of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. The film has remained a poignant moment in firstsite’s 15 year history.

ARTIST ROOMS
Tate and National Galleries of Scotland. Acquired jointly through The d’Offay Donation with assistance from the National Heritage Memorial Fund and The Art Fund 2008

15 artists, 15 days
23 November – 12 December 2009

To launch firstsite’s Artist Space programme and to mark the organisation’s 15th birthday, 15 artists, 15 days will begin on 23 November.

Based on an open submission process, 15 one-day artistic residencies will take place in Colchester. The artists, all from the East of England, will create their work in full view of the public, allowing the processes and ideas behind their art to be demystified. This initiative is developed as part of firstsite’s ‘Artist Space’ programme, a new initiative which is supported by Esmée Fairbairn Foundation.

Queen and Country talks programme
26th October and 9th November 2009

Working in partnership with the University of Essex, firstsite has devised a programme of talks to complement the exhibition of Queen and Country by internationally renowned artist Steve McQueen at the University of Essex Gallery in Colchester. The talks programme includes:

Bearing witness: The role of war artists in the 21st century

Acclaimed artists Paul Seawright and David Cotterrell will be talking about their experiences of working in Afghanistan as representatives of the Imperial War Museum and the Wellcome Trust.

Conflict and flute bands: the Troubles in Northern Ireland

Scottish artist Roderick Buchanan will discuss his current work on a film which explores the legacy of the Troubles in Northern Ireland. Commissioned by the Imperial War Museum in 2008, Buchanan focuses on Loyalist and Republican flute bands, considering how war and conflict shapes the lives of band members.

Home Fires Burning: supporting the soldiers of the Great War

Letters are a way of communicating and containing the pain of war. They are poignant reminders of the vulnerability of soldiers and the conflicting nature of their emotions and the tasks they are required to carry out. Mike Roper, from the University of Essex’s Department of Sociology will draw on his recent book The Secret Battle: Emotional Survival in the Great War to discuss these issues.

All the talks are opportunities to hear about a subject which is particularly relevant in a town whose garrison is an important British Army base.

In conversation with Ronald Blythe
Celebrating the 40th anniversary of Akenfield, a portrait of an English village
1st November 2009 2.30 – 4pm

To mark 40 years since its publication, critic and writer Ian Collins will be in conversation with the prolific writer Ronald Blythe about his seminal book Akenfield.

Described by Roger Deakin as ‘subtle and compassionate’ and by John Updike as ‘exquisite’, Akenfield is a portrait of an English village in the middle years of the 1960s, charting the stories of three generations of its inhabitants. Blythe combined the experiences of people from the village of Charsfield in Suffolk, the author’s own adjoining village of Debach, and a few surrounding hamlets. Considered to be an enduring record of life on the land, firstsite invites the novelist to discuss his works, the land and people of the East of England with the critic Ian Collins.

This event is part of a series of talks, events and films – Here in the East – commissioned by firstsite which celebrate artistic legacy, new talent and sense of place.

This Halloween Idea Generation opens the crypt doors to launch London’s most frightening festival – the Hammer Festival.

“More terrifying than ‘The Curse of Frankenstein’, this is one Hammer production that will leave you shivering”	“’Dracula’ is Christopher Lees and Hammer’s breakthrough movie. It’s terrifyingly good, you’ll want to get your teeth stuck into it”	“Gripping science fiction masterpiece from British horror masters Hammer ”

The Hammer Festival brings together a terrifying programme of film screenings, ghost tours, readings, and an exhibition featuring never-seen-before artwork from their classic and upcoming films, rare and original posters and behind the scenes photos from Britain’s most successful film company Hammer.

The Hammer Festival will be an event you’ll want to get your teeth stuck into as the exhibition, forming the back bone of the festival, unearths images from Hammer’s classic subjects and genres including Hammer Horror, Frankenstein, Dracula, The Living Dead, Thrillers, Science Fiction and Hammer Glamour.

Images and posters dug up from the archives of the most famous and successful independent British film company, Hammer will be displayed at the Idea Generation Gallery celebrating the horror, drama, suspense and glamour of the seminal films which propelled Hammer to cult status.

The exhibition will offer an exclusive look at previously unseen photos, prints and artworks from an array of classic Hammer, behind the scenes photos of stars including Christopher Lee, Ursula Andress, Oliver Reed, Raquel Welch, Peter Cushing & Bette Davis and an exclusive look at artwork from upcoming Hammer releases.

The exhibition will give an insight into Hammer’s incredible legacy with posters and prints from The Brides of Dracula (1960), The Phantom of the Opera (1961) and Hammer House of Horror (1980) displayed alongside terrifying images from The Curse of Frankenstein (1956) and original posters from The Horror of Frankenstein (1970).

Fans will be invited to look if they dare at the spine tingling images from classic pictures The Mummy (1959), Dracula (1957) and The Abominable Snowman (1957). The exhibition will also provide an exclusive look at Hammer’s renowned erotic period, featuring artwork from films such as Lust for a Vampire (1970), The Vampire Lovers (1970) and Slave Girls (1966).

Titan Books will also be launching their latest release, Hammer Glamour, at the exhibition. The book features rare and previously unpublished photographs from Hammer’s archive and private collections worldwide. Featuring new interviews, Hammer Glamour celebrates Hammer’s female stars including Ingrid Pitt, Martine Beswick, Caroline Munro, Barbara Shelley, Joanna Lumley, Nastassja Kinski, and Raquel Welch.

Katy Wild, Editorial Director of Titan Books said: “Hammer is an enduring brand, much beloved for the classic movies that everyone knows, but also now associated with brand new exciting quality film-making.

”We are proud to be associated with this exhibition which celebrates the Hammer heritage and ties in with the publication of our book Hammer Glamour, a fabulous tribute to the beautiful women who featured in Hammer movies over the years, written by Hammer authority, Marcus Hearn.”

Marcus Hearn, Hammer historian said of the exhibition: “The Hammer Horror genre has not long been fifty years old and what better way to show off its rich heritage than with an exhibition during Halloween. Most of the items on the show either haven’t been seen since the respected films were released, if ever, so it will be great to be able to finally share them with the public.”

7 teams of hotly-tipped emerging UK filmmakers have just two days to plan, shoot and edit a classic short film to be shown at Branchage’s Saturday Night Drive-In in Jersey’s People’s Park, 3rd October.

The Vauxhall 48-hour road movie challenge is set to be a race against time as 7 teams of film makers from across the UK sign up to create a classic road movie short in just 48 hours. The challenge will be headed up by prolific and multi-award winning filmmakers Chris and Ben Blaine (Hallo Panda, Death of the Revolution). Each team will be guided by the Blaine Brothers as they explore Jersey’s 9 by 5 mile landmass.

The teams of filmmakers, directors and actors from mainland UK and Jersey alike, will explore the islands cliffs and beaches, towns and villages, fields and ancient ruins in vehicles including an Astra Sport Hatch to create their films. Staying in a ‘Filmmakers Camp’ at Jersey’s Bleu Soleil campsite, the teams will work round the clock to produce their films in time for the Branchage Saturday Night Drive-In in Jersey’s Peoples Park, where they will be screened before the main feature – The Wizard of Oz.

Eastnor Castle Deer Park, Herefordshire, Thursday 6th – Sunday 9th August 2009

Fifteen years old, but fresher and more innovative than ever before, the pioneering festival returns with an unrivalled programme of music, comedy, art, spoken word, film – and a field full of zombies

Following on from a defining year in 2008, The Big Chill returns with a line-up packed to the rafters with some of the most credible names across culture and entertainment. Led by a musical triumvirate that features the iconic David Byrne, dance legends Basement Jaxx and the specially-reformed Orbital, this year’s festival will again be a multi-art form celebration as rich as it is diverse.
Epic experimentalists Spiritualized will bring their stunning set to Eastnor, as will Adrian Sherwood’s Dub Syndicate, recently reunited electronic duo Lamb and Arizona-based rockers Calexico. A strong European dance contingent will include electronica acts Gablé and To Rococo Rot together with French psychedelics Gong.

There will also be festival homecomings Tom Middleton, the indispensable Norman Jay and through the weekend Mr Scruff’s Tea Party will be hijacking Big Chill Radio.

The Coop – a new tent for The Big Chill 2009 – will be hosted on Friday afternoon by Wonky Pop featuring indie-disco-dance hybrids Friendly Fires alongside Alphabeat DJs and a trio of up-and-coming talent in the shape of Magistrates, Marina & The Diamonds and Dan Black. Glaswegian stalwarts Sub Club will host the evening session with DJ sets from Slam, Optimo and Subculture.

London uber-cool trendsetters Horse Meat Disco will then share proceedings with fellow Saturday residents, bohemian internationalists Favela Chic, whose line-up will consist of Ska Cubano, Zombie Zombie and DJ Sandrinho.

With the gates opening at 10am on Thursday 6th August there will an extra full day of festival festivities to partake in – making The Big Chill 2009 a real Summer ‘staycation’.

That evening, courtesy of the BFI, the Mercury Award nominated British Sea Power will perform a UK festival exclusive on the Open Air Stage, as they re-score both the classic Man of Aran, as well as providing a soundtrack to scenes from Jacques Perrin’s stunning documentary Winged Migration.

Film

Thursday will also see an invasion of the undead as Film4 and Warp Films invite Chillers to take part in an attempt to secure an entry into the Guinness Book of Records by shooting the world’s first and largest audience participation zombie motion picture. A downloadable movie, available at the end of the festival, will hopefully capture the largest-ever number of zombies on camera.

Ensuring the nerve jangling does not stop there, Film4 will proceed to screen an all-nighter of eerie flicks.
Through the festival, Film4 will present the Dereliction Drive-In, of deserted and abandoned cars, among, on and in which, Chillers may roam, sit and crash out. As screens play ghostly re-mixes of classic and imagined road movies, car stereos will crackle with soundtracks specially recorded by guest artists and DJs.

This year will also see the all new Film4 Cinema Tent, where super cool road movies will be shown, hot on the heels of their amazing success with Slumdog Millionaire, alongside Bollywood and Bollywood-inspired classics. And Bollywood dance classes will be held in tandem for those who wish to don their salwar kameez and cut some shapes in front of the silver screen.

This will also be the home for The BFI, who along with The ICA, return for a second year. Inspired by the 40th anniversary of the moon landing and the international year of astronomy, they will each curate a unique mix of feature length and short films, live scores and talks.

Comedy

Held in the rural idyll of Eastnor Castle Deer Park, The Big Chill 2009 will also host the cream of comedy.

Having wooed and wowed Chillers in equal numbers at the festival last year, with a triumphant headline appearance on the main stage with his Boosh sidekicks, Noel Fielding will be back with a solo stand up show in the Coop.

Joining him on Saturday afternoon for a triple header of huge stars will be Dylan Moran and Russell Howard.

Now an established stop-off for top performers, this year will see the festival awash with award winners and Edinburgh’s finest. Underbelly return to the Big Chill Nights Tent with a witty contingent comprising Barry Castagnola (MC), Stephen Grant, Terry Saunders, Jerry O’Donnell, Ray Peacock, Sean Hughes, Pierre Hollins, Ben Norris, Marcus Birdman, Rob Rouse, Mitch Benn, Ian Stone, Craig Campbell and Josie Long.

Cabaret and Circus

Circus ensemble NoFit State will bring their family show and workshops to the festival, as well as a specially devised after midnight performance for adults only.

The kooky and strange Perverse Universe return with aerial acrobatics and cabaret. Expect a weekend of aerial circus and awe-inspiring fire shows. All rounded off by Jonny Woo’s deliciously wicked variety show spectacular, featuring Gay Bingo and Hot Breath Karaoke.

Photography, Art and Spoken Word

World famous photographer Rankin – a man who has snapped everyone from Tony Blair to the Queen, via the likes of Kate Moss her celebrity contemporaries – is inviting festival-goers to take part in his unique live and interactive exhibition concept Rankin Live!

Before he shoots and instantly prints the portraits of 1,000 Brits at his museum-scale exhibition in August, Rankin is holding an open call process for people aged 13 and over, the only criteria of which is a distinctive style, with sense of British eccentricity and enthusiasm.

Normally a Brick Lane neighbour of the festival’s Big Chill Bar, the Vauxhall Art Car Boot Fair has presented an astonishing selection of exciting art works and art wares from some of the UK’s foremost artists since 2004, including Gavin Turk, Sir Peter Blake, Bob and Roberta Smith, Stuart Semple and Tracey Emin.

Heading for the hills on a rural road trip away from its familiar east London home, one of the country’s most innovative art fairs will park up The Big Chill 2009. As a ‘fete within the festival’ it will be a haven for both browsers and bargain hunters throughout the weekend.

With its own Village Green at the heart of festival, Chillers will also be able to play the human fruit machine Yoo Froot! and enjoy a karaoke sing along with the fabulous East End party house, the Bethnal Green Working Men’s Club.

Artist Henry Krokatsis has been working closely with the Art Trail curator Alice Sharp developing his ideas to respond to Eastnor Castle’s landscape and festival setting.

He will create a ten metre high ‘helter-skelter-lighthouse’ as a centre piece for the festival. It will be situated on the lake by the main stage and illuminated after dark by festoons wrapped around its skeleton.

Word In Motion offers a programme featuring word gamesters from all walks of life – authors, comedians, lyricists, late night storytellers and lovers of language bring a weekend of entertainment with a difference.

Apples and Snakes return to the tent with their offering of fresh and funky spoken words. Ursula Rucker is also back to headline, along with eminent UK street poets, the legendary Liverpool poet Brian Patten and the remarkable, cooler than a cucumber, author, broadcaster and performer Lemn Sissay.

The talks programme is introduced by publisher James Brown and will feature Tony Benn and music mogul and festival producer Vince Power.

The Victorian Funfair and Kids Zone

Experience some Victorian time-warp fun as you gallop with glee on the Pony ride Carousel, or get high in the sky over the festival on the helter skelter as the Victorian Funfair returns to The Big Chill, along with its 19th century flat-capped and bonneted crew.

Enchanted Garden

With the 15th birthday celebrations this year, The Big Chill has been looking back to its roots and redefining what it means to chill out. Set in a beautiful woodland space and placing equal emphasis on surroundings and performance, Stop the City will be the place to escape the rat race. It will feature artists, sound-based installations and visuals that lie far from mainstream life. Expect anything from found sounds, classical to minimalist electronic perhaps with a dose of interactivity.

The area will also feature a knitting area, Crap Stage, the Busker’s Stage, in association with SolarAid, tethered balloon, therapies and Monkey Shoulder.

The Crap Stage is calling all bands, magicians, contortionists, poets, orators and assorted musicians to perform this year. Traditional backline and costumes provided but please feel free to bring your ukulele and a sense of humour to join in on a first come first served basis.

Following on from the eccentric and joyous delights of last year’s presence; The Buskers are returning with performing pirates, Dr Butlers Hatstand Medicine Band and the debut festival appearance of Another Fine Day’s new acoustic project based around the Hang Drum and the Aray Mbira.

SolarAid, a charity that empowers the world’s poorest communities to create clean renewable power, have hooked up with the festival to create The Busker Stage.

The Big Issue

The new landmark collaborations for 2009, with the likes of Vauxhall and Film4, add breadth to the content of the event – alongside the breakthrough partnerships which were set-up last year, and return this.

One of those formed in 2008, the festival’s friendship with The Big Issue has since grown ever-stronger, and was chosen to help mark the mid-teen anniversary. On 16th March 2009 an album was released to help raise money for the homeless charity, with all profits from the 15 by 15: a celebration of 15 years of The Big Chill compilation going to the aid organisation.

The track listing was determined by 15 Big Chill luminaries selecting a tune each. The audio scrapbook features the likes of Norman Jay MBE, Gilles Peterson, Tom Middleton, Mr Scruff, Coldcut, Tuung, Jon Hopkins and the Big Chill Forum dwellers. Opting for tracks by Orbital, The Cinematic Orchestra, 4 Hero, The Orb, Ulrich Schnauss and Jon Shuttleworth the memento serves as a permanent reminder of bygone Summers.

Official vendors will again be back selling souvenir Big Chill special editions of the magazine to supplement the festival programme.

Rough Trade

The Big Chill has also partnered with Rough Trade, the pioneering record label and iconic outlet.

Getting Ready For The Big Chill

Before the festival itself, come The Big Chill warm-up parties. Following March’s London launch at Cargo where queues snaked through Shoreditch for a taster from Orbital’s Phil Hartnoll, The Big Chill will board the Eurostar and is bound for Paris.

On Wednesday 22nd April will go international for a preview party in the French capital at Favela Chic – Futurecop! and Gablé will play live with DJ sets from Toddla T and Gringo da Para.
